Low Profile cards define shorter-height adapter cards that offer the same attributes as full-height PCI and AGP by maintaining the same electrical characteristics, functionality, PC signals, and software drivers as standard expansion cards. The use of Low Profile cards allows the elimination of riser cards in slim tower desktop designs and 2U rack mount servers while simplifying the design and lowering total system cost. Low Profile cards are mechanically similar to full-height I/O cards but shorter in overall height. This allows the card vendor to leverage designs of full-height cards optimized around a smaller board real estate. At the same time, the use of Low Profile cards has no impact to the motherboard design and allows interchangeability between the two card types. At a system level, Low Profile cards require a smaller opening in the back of the system for external connection to peripherals and components.
